Behind the Bar

By: Zack

First and foremost, thank you so much for visiting our website. We hope to see you around the tavern sometime too! (If you haven’t already, become a member)

Whether you’re here because you want to know a little more about what exactly is going on at that new place on Fayetteville Street, or you just want to know a little bit about what it’s like working to open a bar in one of the fastest growing cities in America, you’ve come to the right place.

This blog is one of the many ways we want to connect with you. We’ll be keeping you posted with the upcoming events at Isaac Hunter’s Oak City Tavern, as well as Raleigh in general. Occasionally we’ll post a few stories about the bar, or highlight a local artist we like. Often, we’ll post here because we want to hear what YOU have to say.

We’ve striven to make Hunters a place that we can be proud of, and we hope you’ll choose to be a part of our family once you stop by for a few drinks. We know that there’s no way that we can live up to the legend of the original Isaac Hunter’s Tavern but we’re determined to capture the spirit of that local watering hole that changed North Carolina forever, and became the birthplace of our hometown.

We’ve dedicated a lot of time towards making Hunter’s as authentic as possible. Our bar is built out of reclaimed wood from an ancient Guilford County tobacco barn that had to be torn down to make way for a highway. We tried to emphasize as much of the history of our building as possible in our design. Our signature cocktail list has quite a few recipes that you might never have heard of unless you were around back in Joel Lane’s day. They probably didn’t have table-top shuffleboard back in 1782 but I think Isaac would have been a pretty big fan.

We all agreed from day one that we wanted to build a bar that was dedicated to celebrating exactly what makes Raleigh unique, and why we are proud to call it our home. The story of Isaac Hunter’s Tavern lies at the very heart of who we are, and what we want this bar to aspire to be. We wanted to create a place that was more than just another bar downtown. We’re not in it to make a million dollars and then jet back to our mansion in the Alps. We’re here because we wanted to build a bar that was by Raleigh, about Raleigh, and for Raleigh.

That’s our mission statement. Please feel free to let us know how we’re doing.

SNOW MY GOD

If it’s Wednesday then its Whiskey Wednesday at Isaac Hunter’s. This week we’ve got something special for you: $5 glasses of Gentleman Jack. Known as the softer side of Jack, you can expect Gentleman Jack to open the door and pull your chair out for you in addition to getting you drunk. Gentleman Jack will never take advantage of you though, but instead he will sleep on the floor next to your bed so as not to make you uncomfortable. He also mixes well with a dash of ginger-ale.

We’ll also have Evan Williams going for $3 a glass.

It’s that time of the month– First Friday is here again!! Okay technically its the second Friday but most people were still sleeping off their champagne hangovers on the real First Friday this time around, so they pushed it back to the second Friday of the month.

This Friday we’re featuring recent works from local artist Amy Frierson. Amy was born and raised in Wilmington until she moved to Raleigh to attend North Carolina State’s prestigious College of Design. Her artwork spans across many mediums but she specializes in paintings and print work.

Come by on Friday to see her collection, and enjoy $4.50 glasses of wine and, as always, $2 PBR pints.

First Night Raleigh

Don't miss it!

For those of you who are big fans of Jack Daniel’s, Wednesday is a great day to come out and try something new. This Whiskey Wednesday special we’re featuring Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel for just $6. Our well whiskey is also on sale for just $3 as well!

Jack Daniels Single Barrel comes from the best of the best barrels of Jack that are brewed each year. Jeff Arnett, the master distiller for Jack Daniel’s, picks less than half of 1% of the best barrels each year to sell as Single Barrel.  The taste has more oak, and more of a kick to it than regular Jack Daniels. At $6, you won’t find a better deal on this unique offering from the heart of Tennessee, so come on by Isaac Hunter’s on Wednesday and try a glass.

Our First Week

By: Zack

Well, our first week is in the books and I got to tell ya, we couldn’t be happier. We’ve met a lot of you this week, and it’s been pretty cool getting to know you. I had no idea so many people were playing FourSquare!

Have you guys ever heard of Hash Runs before? Check out the website, I’d wager more than a few of you will want to join up on the next run! I must admit that the last thing we expected to see on a rainy weekday night was fifty soaking wet runners charging into the tavern in search of a beer before they were off to their next destination but we couldn’t have been happier to be a part of their journey!

winterfest

Winterfest on Friday was a lot of fun. Did any of you manage to get out on the ice in City Plaza? I heard the wait was nearly two hours long! The tavern was packed that night, and the music was going strong. We were excited to reveal our collection of local art in the gallery, the pieces look fantastic.

Lucky

Did you get to try a Shotgun Betty or that Triangle IPA? Both were a big hit this week. As a matter of fact, we had a little trouble keeping all four of our local Raleigh beers in stock because people liked them so much! We’re not stopping at four of course, there’s much more to come. We’ll be expanding our draft selection by a good amount in the next couple of weeks so keep your eyes peeled for whats coming next. I’ll give you a hint, it’s brewed in Winston Salem and if you have more than a couple of them you might wind up flat on your back.

I was glad to see more than a few Raleigh bourbon drinkers make it to the tavern on our first week. As a matter of fact, I don’t think we quite anticipated just how many of you share our love for a fine glass of whiskey on a rainy Tuesday.

Lucky has never made so many friends in her life. She’s had a blast snuggling up on the couch with some of you, or trying to climb up your bar stool so she can find a spot on your lap. She should be around most weekdays, so make sure you stop in to say hello and maybe give her a treat– she promises she’ll be your best friend forever and ever if you do.

We’ve added some Shuffleboardmore wines since we first opened, so make sure you stop by and check them out. I’ve heard nothing but good things about our Riesling, so make sure you try a glass next time you swing by.

I’m proud to say we were right about shuffleboard– it rocks and Raleigh has needed a good shuffleboard joint for years! We just (finally!) got in the sand for the table so it’s finally up to tournament condition.

I’m excited to see whats in store for this week, and I hope to see a lot of you come on back soon. As always, we love hearing from you guys so let us know what we can do to help make your experience here at the tavern even better.

Evan Pike Photography put this slideshow together for us with lots of pics he’s taken of the tavern during the renovation process. Thanks Evan!

Tyler from Triangle Blvd stopped by the other night to do a quick interview with Zack about Isaac Hunter’s Oak City Tavern, Raleigh’s newest watering hole.

Make sure you take a couple of minutes to swing by TriangleBlvd, definitely one of the best ways to keep tabs on what’s going on around Raleigh!
